Implementation of the Psychological Basic Needs Questionnaire for People with Intellectual Disabilities

The Psychological Basic Needs Questionnaire for People with Intellectual Disabilities is a reliable and validated instrument that provides insight into the extent to which the three basic psychological needs of people with mild intellectual disabilities are being met: autonomy, relatedness, and competence. In practice, the questionnaire has proven to be a valuable tool. However, care professionals indicate that they need guidance in translating the questionnaire’s results into their daily practice. This study focuses on the development and implementation of coaching to support this translation from assessment to practice. The coaching aims to increase awareness and use of the questionnaire and to help care professionals adapt their practices in ways that promote the self-determination of people with mild intellectual disabilities. By linking the assessment of clients’ psychological needs to concrete changes in professional practice, this approach provides a valuable addition to existing support methodologies.
