Care and support for us, with us: the role of people with mild intellectual disabilities in disability care
Disability care providers are increasingly facing a shortage of personnel. At the same time, job market participation of people with mild intellectual disabilities is much lower than that of the general population, even though work is essential in helping people with mild intellectual disabilities enjoy equal rights and achieve full participation in society. One of the developments in this area is hiring people with mild intellectual disabilities to support others with mild intellectual disabilities in disabled care settings. But we need specialised knowledge to utilise and successfully build on the unique opportunities offered by this development. What are the opportunities and challenges facing rollout of this approach? Which factors help and which hinder people with mild intellectual disabilities succeed in disability care when hired to provide support to others with mild intellectual disabilities? These are the key research questions of this project.
