Practical guide ‘Care and support for us, with us’
The employment rate among people with intellectual disabilities is lower than that of people without intellectual disabilities. Yet work can contribute to personal development, mental and physical well-being, living a meaningful life, and building social connections. At the same time, disability care organisations are facing growing staff shortages. In practice, people with intellectual disabilities are increasingly being given opportunities to contribute by carrying out care-related tasks for other people with intellectual disabilities. The AWVB made a practical guide for care organisations regarding the employment of staff with intellectual disabilities.
The practical guide is developed based on research by the AWVB and with funding from the Association of Educationalists in the Netherlands (NVO). The guide offers practical tips and recommendations for successfully and sustainably employing staff members with a mild intellectual disability—benefiting the employees themselves, clients, and care professionals alike. This enables care organizations to create genuine opportunities and make optimal use of the talents of people with disabilities, while simultaneously addressing staffing challenges in the care sector (including disability care). In addition to the guide, the AWVB also produced an infographic summarizing the key findings and insights from the research.
