Guide ‘Building connections in the care of people with intellectual disabilities’
The network of people with intellectual disabilities plays an indispensable role in their lives, but also in the care and support they receive. The AWVB has created a practical and accessible guide for parents, siblings, peer support workers, neighbors, volunteers, and healthcare professionals to help them shape care together.
The guide is based on research conducted by the AWVB (Authority for the Protection of Intellectual Disabilities) – commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport – into the role that people with intellectual disabilities (experts by experience) and informal network members (parents, siblings, neighbors, and volunteers) can and want to play in the care of people with intellectual disabilities. It also examines what healthcare professionals need to shape this care – together with this network.
The unique knowledge, experiences, and insights of family members, neighbors, volunteers, healthcare professionals, and other people with intellectual disabilities can complement each other and help ensure quality of life and care now and in the future. A key requirement is respect for and understanding of each other’s needs and roles, so that everyone can make a valuable contribution.
A video based on the guide was also released..
