Family and others: a web app for people with mild intellectual disabilities

Research shows that family members play a central role in the social network of people with mild intellectual disabilities. Understanding the family network can help actively engage and strengthen the social network. The web app “Familie enzo” (Family and others) helps with this.

The Family and others app enables people with mild intellectual disabilities to map their own family network. Users can customise their account avatar, including individual characteristics such as hair colour, glasses, and facial hair options. Individuals can then add (avatars of) family members and other important people to their family network by answering questions such as ‘Who is important to you?’ and ‘Who helps you when you’re feeling out of sorts?’ Once the individual has responded to all questions, a clear visual overview of their network appears. The result can be printed out as a family portrait or downloaded in PDF format.

The web app includes a manual for professionals to help people with mild intellectual disabilities understand the meaning of their network overview. The app is available to everyone, free of charge and assists in enhancing the participation and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in their own care. (Dutch only)
